Aste’ features all previously unreleased tracks from master of minimalism Mika Vainio, long-rumoured and at long last available after weeks of delay. The tracks here were written in 1993, around the same time as the crucial Röntgen and Kvantti EP’s (and also the year the world first heard from Basic Channel) – and the quality and depth of tracks here is hard to fathom – unmatched reduced Chicago and acid edits, stripped techno templates with seemingly endless bass drops and percussive progressions that may as well be the pre-set template for Minimalism, circa 2006. The album’s opener is ‘Spiraalit’ an explosive warehouse banger complete with dirty acid bassline and pumping 808 beats, then we’re fired into more atmospheric territory with the mysterious ‘Sukeltava’ – quite an unbeleivable track. The highlight of ‘Aste’ for me is ‘Maan Valossa’ a beatless transition based around a simple synth melody which loops in and out of time while a Finnish voice chatters in the background – it simply transports you into another world.
