Adelantándose como siempre a los tiempos, en 1972 The Residents dieron la espalda a la industria musical dominante y crearon su propio sello Ralph Records, tomando el control de todos los aspectos del proceso de grabación, diseño y fabricación de sus discos. A lo largo de la década siguiente, Ralph publicaría numerosos singles y álbumes seminales de una amplia gama de artistas tanto de EE.UU. como de Europa, capturando perfectamente el espíritu de la época del punk y la new wave.
«Buy Or Die!» no es sólo una visión del mundo de The Residents, sino también del funcionamiento de su mentalidad DIY, con la mayoría de los temas grabados en el propio estudio del grupo y editados con material gráfico producido por su propio departamento de diseño. Encontramos desde nombres consagrados como Yello y los propios The Residents, hasta joyas menos conocidas de Fred Frith, Tuxedomoon, Chrome, Renaldo & The Loaf y otros, con singles clave, temas de los primeros álbumes escogidos y también una serie de grabaciones que aparecen en CD por primera vez. También material inédito de: Schwump, Snakefinger, MX-80 Sound y Gary Panter,
Incluye además de 3 compactos (más de 60 temas!) , un grueso libreto con un ensayo en primera persona de 7.500 palabras del misterioso archivero de The Residents, abundantes imágenes inusuales y raras y muchas pistas extraídas directamente del archivo de cintas de Ralph, todo ello supervisado por The Residents.
