Detailed information:
“The Lost Tapes offers us some secret homemade gems recordings from the 1980s rich Spanish underground” (From the liner notes by the musician Mattin, author of Social Disonance and member of the group Al Karpenter).
The music on this cassette dates from 1985. Its author, Marcelo Expósito, calls it “conceptual noise music” and it is part of a cycle of sound experimentation (1983-1988) whose results have remained practically unpublished in their entirety, and whose recordings, disseminated in very few copies of cassettes distributed privately, were even lost for decades until a few original tapes reappeared by chance in 2023. Marcelo Expósito has recently remixed these sounds to release them on this cassette, The Lost Tapes, which Geometrik Records is publishing under the reference EGK 023, taking up the thread of the cassette reissues of Spanish industrial, electronic and noise music from the eighties that Discos Esplendor Geométrico carried out in its beginnings.
Marcelo Expósito is a Spanish artist who has widely shown his work at venues such as the Venice, Berlin, Buenos Aires and Cuenca (Ecuador) biennials and in a countless number of institutions and museums of contemporary art mainly across Europe and Latin America. He was known at a very young age for being the driving force (together with Eduardo Mugas) behind the fanzine-cassette Necronomicón, a platform that operated between 1984-1987 as a publisher of compilations that included a large number of names in the international industrial scene after the first generation of Throbbing Gristle. The Radio del Museo Reina Sofía (RRS) in Madrid dedicated a series of programmes in which Marcelo Expósito gave an extensive oral account of those years, resulting in a long document entitled “Necronomicon. A conversation with Marcelo Expósito about noise, networks and industrial culture in the shadow of the new wave” constitutes one of the main reflective testimonies that exist today in Spanish about those noisy (in all senses) years.
The music of The Lost Tapes shows the international influence originally exerted by musicians and groups such as Maurizio Bianchi, Nocturnal Emissions, Nurse With Wound, P16. D4, Etant-Donnés or Asmus Tietchens, being also directly related to the precursor works of Francisco Felipe (La Otra Cara de un Jardín), Rafael Flores (Comando Bruno), María José González (Ani Zinc / Neo Zelanda) or Francisco López (El Internado), and in general the whole network of creative and affective collaboration that the pioneers of this kind of sounds and counterculture in Spain in the 80s weaved intensely. Geometrik Records continues in this way to bring to the present the kind of experimental music that is at the origin of its foundation as a label, as is the case not only with Esplendor Geométrico, but also with others such as Javier Hernando (Melodinámika Sensor), Miguel A. Ruiz (Orfeón Gagarin) or Eduardo Polonio.
