En 1973, Faust ya había reconfigurado los circuitos del rock alemán. Sus dos primeros álbumes habían roto con la forma tradicional de las canciones, haciendo caso omiso de la continuidad, la coherencia o el atractivo comercial. The Faust Tapes, publicado a principios de ese año por 49 peniques como una muestra surrealista de su genio del corte y pegado, les había ganado un público británico curioso y la indulgencia de Virgin Records. Por un breve momento, pareció que Faust podría finalmente jugar el juego, solo un poco. Lo que surgió en su lugar fue Faust IV, su obra más paradójica: lo suficientemente accesible como para atraer a los oyentes, lo suficientemente compleja como para mantenerlos intrigados.
