En agosto de 2022, la leyenda de la música del cuarto mundo Ariel Kalma, residente en Australia y nacido en Francia, fue invitado a participar en la serie de colaboraciones especiales Late Junction de BBC Radio 3. El programa empareja a artistas que no han colaborado anteriormente para crear música nueva juntos. Kalma se apresuró a sugerir la colaboración con dos músicos a los que no conocía: los artistas Jeremiah Chiu y Marta Sofia Honer, cuyo debut a dúo Recordings from the Åland, aclamado por la crítica, se había publicado unos meses antes. Kalma envió una invitación a Chiu y Honer, que fue recibida con gran entusiasmo. Tras cumplir su objetivo de 20 minutos de música para el programa (que eran cuatro temas en total), los tres músicos estaban satisfechos, pero al mismo tiempo sentían que había mucho más que decir, más trabajo por hacer. Los tres músicos acordaron colectivamente que seguirían trabajando juntos e intentarían llevar la música más lejos. The Closest Thing to Silence es el resultado de sus esfuerzos.
